My day: Hua Shifu Wujin Times shopping guide

Wang Ruoxi is the last among the four interviewees to start her workday—ten in the morning. While others have already completed part of their packaging tasks, dealt with urgent matters, or replied to emails, she slowly makes her way to the store to begin her day. Don’t mistake her for someone who doesn't take her job seriously. Before the first customer arrives, Wang Ruoxi quickly tidies up the storefront and ensures the store looks clean and welcoming. Most furniture shoppers tend to come earlier in the day, making sales crucial from the very start.

After wrapping up the previous day’s orders, Wang Ruoxi greets her first customer of the day. Experienced shopping guides can often tell if a customer is genuinely interested in purchasing during product demonstrations. Even if the customer is just browsing, she still gives her best effort. On non-holiday days, foot traffic usually stays around 5 to 8 people, and today is no different. “I usually work overtime on weekends, but if I can close an order every time I stay late, I’m happy to do it,” she says with a smile, showing off a new customer order.

After lunch, Wang Ruoxi immediately returns to work. “There's no such thing as a noon break for us shopping guides. We try to keep our meals under thirty minutes.” When there are fewer customers in the afternoon, she starts calling potential buyers to secure more orders. “Being a shopping guide is also about sales, and there’s definitely pressure. But I really love this job. I’ve been in sales since graduation, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Due to the store’s closing time, shopping guides are usually the most punctual when they finish work. However, after work, Wang Ruoxi, who is always talkative at the office, turns into a quiet housewife. “Everyone has different personalities. I usually go straight home after work. I rarely go out or socialize. I like to cook a good meal, relax, watch TV, and surf the internet. I’m almost ready to sleep by night. Although I don’t have many relatives here, Shenzhen is still a great place for young people like me—it offers so many opportunities.”

“—If you could go back in time, would you still choose this career?”

“—I still want to be in sales, but maybe in a different industry.”
