Once the required moment of inertia for the entire generator system is determined, the moment of inertia of the diesel generator flywheel can be calculated. When determining the flywheel's moment of inertia, several key factors should be considered:
(1) In most diesel generator sets, the generator is directly driven by the diesel engine. The moment of inertia of the generator rotor is typically proportional to its power. Therefore, when calculating the flywheel’s inertia, it is important to account for the combined inertia of both the diesel engine and the generator. This includes the connection between the generator rotor and the diesel engine. After subtracting the inertia contributions from other components, the remaining inertia must be compensated by the flywheel. This ensures that the overall system meets the necessary rotational stability requirements.
(2) For series diesel generators, the design of the flywheel's moment of inertia should not only meet the overall machine requirements but also aim to minimize the flywheel size as much as possible. This helps in simplifying production and inventory management. As shown in calculations, the formula used to determine the total moment of inertia provides the minimum value needed to achieve a certain level of rotational uniformity. However, in engineering practice, it is advisable to slightly increase this value to ensure better performance and reduce the need for larger flywheels. For example, in the L+V20/27 series diesel engines, which operate at two standard speeds (1000r/min and 900r/min), there are 18 models in total, yet only five different flywheel types are used across all configurations. This demonstrates how careful design can optimize flywheel selection without compromising performance.
