My day: Hua Shifu Wujin Times shopping guide

Wang Ruoxi is the last among the four interviewees to start her day, arriving at 10 a.m. While others have already completed parts of their packaging tasks, handled urgent matters, or replied to emails, she slowly walks into the store to begin her shift. However, don't mistake being a sales guide for an easy job. Before the first customer arrives, Wang Ruoxi makes sure to tidy up the storefront and present a clean, welcoming image. Most furniture buyers tend to shop earlier in the day, so being proactive is essential.

After wrapping up the previous day’s orders, Wang Ruoxi welcomed her first customer of the day. Experienced sales guides can often tell if a customer is serious about buying during product demonstrations. Even if the customer is just browsing, she gives her best effort. On regular days, foot traffic usually stays around 5 to 8 customers, and today was no different. “I usually work overtime on weekends, but if I can close a deal each time, I’m happy to stay late,” she said with a smile, showing off a new order from a satisfied customer.

After lunch, Wang Ruoxi immediately got back to work. “For us, there’s no real noon break. We try to keep our meals under 30 minutes.” When there were fewer customers in the afternoon, she started calling those who had shown interest in purchasing, aiming to secure more orders. “Being a sales guide is also selling, and there's definitely pressure. But I truly enjoy this job. Since graduation, I've been in sales, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Due to the store's closing time, the shopping guide is the most punctual one when it comes to leaving. However, after work, Wang Ruoxi, who seems confident and articulate, turns into a typical homebody. “Everyone has different personalities. I usually go straight home after work. I rarely go out; I prefer cooking a good meal, relaxing, watching TV, or browsing the internet. I’m almost ready to sleep by night. Although I don’t have many relatives here, Shenzhen is still a great city that offers young people like me a lot of opportunities.”

“—If you could go back in time, would you still choose this career?”

“—Yes, I’d still want to be in sales, but maybe in a different industry.”
