Polypropylene capacity is expected to reach 12.72 million tons during the year

In 2012, the polypropylene industry is set for another major expansion phase. According to a recent report, China's domestic production capacity is expected to reach 12.72 million tons by the end of the year, with an annual increase exceeding 2 million tons. This surge in capacity reflects the growing demand for plastic materials across various sectors, including packaging, automotive, and construction. The commissioning of new projects such as Shenhua’s 300,000-ton facility, Ning Coal’s 500,000-ton plant, and Datang’s 500,000-ton coal-to-olefins project has significantly boosted the coal-based petrochemical sector. As a rising force in the industry, coal-to-olefins is challenging the traditional dominance of oil-based producers like Sinopec. This shift is reshaping the market landscape and introducing more competition. However, the rapid expansion of production capacity also brings challenges. The imbalance between supply and demand is becoming more pronounced, especially in the general-purpose plastics segment. As a result, competition among manufacturers is intensifying. To stay competitive, traditional oil-based producers are shifting their focus toward specialty materials, which offer higher value and better margins. Despite these challenges, the expansion of polypropylene capacity is seen as a positive development for the industry. It not only represents new investments but also drives the elimination of outdated facilities and promotes structural reforms in the petrochemical sector.
