For years, the issue of fire safety in polystyrene-based building insulation has been a major concern for China's construction industry. However, this long-standing problem may soon be resolved thanks to an innovative breakthrough. Shanghai Yada Special Coating Co., Ltd. recently introduced a new product called Yada Polymeric Polystyrene, which is expected to revolutionize the market and address fire-related risks at their root.
On November 29, 2012, a significant fire resistance test was conducted at the Institute of Fire Protection under the China Academy of Building Research. The experiment involved a polyphenyl board placed in a controlled environment with a flame temperature reaching 950°C for 45 minutes. The results were impressive: only a small area at the base showed signs of ablation, while the rest of the material remained intact, with no dripping or collapse observed. Industry leaders and fire safety experts from the National Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development praised the performance, confirming that the polymerized polystyrene board does not spread flames when exposed to fire. This makes it fully compliant with China’s Class A2 fire protection standards for exterior wall insulation materials.
With building energy consumption accounting for over 30% of the nation’s total energy use, improving insulation efficiency is a key priority. As part of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan,†the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has set a target to increase building insulation coverage to 65%. This includes both new constructions and the gradual retrofitting of existing buildings. To achieve these goals, various insulation methods and materials are currently being used, including mortar-based and panel-based systems, as well as inorganic and organic insulation materials.
Despite the diversity of options, the "Expanded Polystyrene Board and Thin Plaster Exterior Wall Insulation System" has dominated the market for many years. Developed by Germany, this system has been in use for nearly 60 years and is considered a mature and reliable solution. It has gained widespread acceptance in Europe and North America, holding a significant share of the global insulation market. With the introduction of the Yada Polymeric Polystyrene, the industry may now be on the verge of a safer and more sustainable future.
