Polystyrene building insulation overcomes fire problems

Polystyrene building insulation overcomes fire problems For years, the issue of flammability in polystyrene-based building insulation has been a major concern in China’s construction industry. However, this long-standing challenge may finally be on its way to being resolved. A groundbreaking product called Yada Polymeric Polystyrene has recently been introduced by Shanghai Yada Special Coating Co., Ltd., offering a safer and more effective solution for building insulation. On November 29, 2012, an important fire resistance test was conducted at the Institute of Fire Protection under the China Academy of Building Research. During the experiment, a polystyrene board was exposed to a flame temperature of 950°C for 45 minutes. The results showed that only a small area—within one meter at the bottom—experienced some ablation, while the rest of the material remained intact without any dripping or collapse. Experts from the National Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development praised the performance, confirming that the polymerized polystyrene board does not spread flames when exposed to fire. This means it meets the strict requirements of China's Class A2 fireproofing standard for exterior wall insulation materials. Building energy consumption currently accounts for over 30% of total national energy use in China. As part of the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has set a goal to improve building insulation efficiency to 65%. This includes both new constructions and the gradual retrofitting of existing buildings. With such high energy demands, the need for reliable and safe insulation materials is more critical than ever. While there are various types of insulation systems available—such as mortar-based and panel-based solutions—expanded polystyrene (EPS) boards have long dominated the market. Originally developed in Germany, this insulation system has been in use for over 60 years and is considered a proven and mature technology. It has gained widespread adoption across Europe and the United States, holding a significant share of the global insulation market. With the introduction of Yada Polymeric Polystyrene, the future of building insulation in China looks more promising and safer than ever before.
