Citrus is highly valued for its rich vitamin content, making it a nutritious and popular fruit. However, citrus cultivation requires careful water management. In spring, regular watering is essential, while during summer, when temperatures rise and sunlight becomes intense, the need for water increases significantly. Yet, overwatering or improper timing can lead to fruit drop. So, how should you manage your citrus trees in the fall? The **China Pesticide Network** shares some science-based autumn citrus care and disease prevention tips today.

1. **Managing New Shoots**: Early autumn shoots are crucial for next year's flowering and fruiting. Around mid-July, it's important to prune uniform shoots and pinch back new growth when it reaches about 20 cm to encourage healthy autumn shoots. Any late shoots that appear after mid-September should be removed to prevent frost damage. Additionally, in mid-to-late September, spraying the trees with a suitable plant regulator can help redirect energy from shoot growth to flower bud development, reducing the risk of late-season sprouting.
2. **Drought and Storm Protection**: From July to August, high temperatures and strong sunlight increase the risk of drought. It's important to maintain soil moisture by combining irrigation with proper fertilization and mulching. If the soil becomes too dry, flood the orchard promptly. Also, secure branches to prevent breakage from typhoons. After a storm, it's advisable to spray a high-fat film solution combined with tree guards to disinfect and protect against bacterial infections.
3. **Pest Control**:
- **Locuspid Moth**: When shoots reach 3mm in length and the infestation rate exceeds 20%, apply an effective pesticide along with a new high-fat film to enhance control.
- **Cockroaches and Black Scale**: Monitor pest activity and spray as needed. Using a 600x dilution of new high-fat film can improve the effectiveness of the treatment and reduce bacterial spread.
- **Rust Mites**: For prevention, it’s recommended to use a 50% Tolk WP diluted 2000 times, mixed with 800x new high-fat film, and spray 2–3 times throughout the season.
By following these practices, you can ensure healthier citrus trees and better yields. Whether you're a seasoned grower or just starting out, proper autumn care plays a key role in the long-term success of your citrus orchard.
