Three major drawbacks in the second-hand furniture market

In recent months, numerous citizens have reported significant issues with second-hand furniture they purchased, including short lifespans and strong chemical odors that cause discomfort. Many consumers describe the pungent glue smell as overwhelming, even affecting their health. A survey revealed that despite the high demand for used furniture due to a booming rental market, the second-hand furniture sector remains largely unregulated. From acquisition and transportation to renovation, pricing, and sales, each store operates independently, often without oversight. The three main problems in this market are the lack of warranty, unauthorized renovations, and unpredictable pricing. Once buyers realize they've been sold low-quality items, they usually have no recourse due to the absence of receipts or documentation. Lack of Warranty From what is observed in the market, most second-hand furniture lacks any form of warranty. Once these items are acquired by sellers, there's typically no proof of purchase or guarantee. If a customer encounters quality issues, they cannot return the product or seek assistance from the original manufacturer. One shop owner at the Huaigu second-hand market admitted that while he has a permit for selling used goods, warranty documents are rarely provided. Most second-hand furniture stores operate under the rule that "once sold, it's final." If a buyer needs repairs, they are advised to visit a carpenter instead. Private Renovations According to Liu Yilin, an industry expert, many consumers hold a misconception about second-hand furniture, believing that since it was previously owned, it should be safe and free of harmful substances. However, the reality is quite different. Many second-hand furniture shops engage in extensive "beautification" processes, often using unknown or substandard materials. This practice not only reduces the lifespan of the furniture but also poses serious health risks. While professional restoration services exist, they are costly. In contrast, second-hand stores often use cheap adhesives and paints, which can emit toxic fumes over time. Random Pricing The second-hand furniture market is currently in a chaotic state, with prices fluctuating based on supply and demand. For example, a 70% new rattan lounge chair might be priced at 50 yuan in winter and jump to 100 yuan in summer, while its actual cost is only around 10 yuan. Due to the lack of formal channels, old furniture is often sold cheaply to informal dealers. These dealers, known as "yellow croakers," frequently travel between regions to buy and resell furniture, sometimes increasing the price multiple times during transport. This lack of regulation makes it difficult for consumers to know the true value of the products they're purchasing.
