U.S. Undergraduate Program Launches Moon Lander

On the 22nd, according to international media reports, a team of students from U.S. universities announced an ambitious plan and is aiming to become the fourth group in history to send a spacecraft to the moon. The team, based at Penn State University, has set out to develop a lunar lander capable of taking off and landing multiple times, making it easier to explore the moon’s surface. They hope to launch their commercial mission in 2015, but only if they can secure enough funding. On their fundraising page, the group stated: “Historically, moon missions have required great intelligence and determination, often backed by government support. Today, while the same brainpower and willpower are still needed, the country isn’t necessary anymore. For the first time, a group of students with dreams, schools, and your support will send a spacecraft to the moon.”

The team is competing for the Google Lunar X Prize, a global competition aimed at landing a privately funded spacecraft on the moon. If successful, their mission will not only return data to Earth but also engrave the names of contributors onto the lander. As one of the first 20 Rocketists—students and their mentors—they aim to make history by placing a spacecraft on the lunar surface.

Once on the moon, the lander will take off again, fly a short distance, and land once more—a first in human space exploration. The team has done extensive calculations to determine how long the "Lunar Lions" can survive on the moon. Since the craft may carry names and messages from supporters, knowing its endurance is crucial. According to them, the lander could remain operational for tens of millions of years.

The team believes they have a strong chance of winning the Google Lunar X Prize and becoming the first non-governmental organization to successfully land on the moon. They’ve already confirmed their launch date and completed the spacecraft design. “The 'Lunar Lions' are on track to win the Google Lunar X Award and become the first private entity to achieve this historic mission,” they said. The next step involves building and testing a prototype. In December 2015, the Lunar Lions Lander will be launched aboard a commercial rocket. After a five-day journey through space, it will touch down on the moon and send high-definition images and videos back to Penn State Mission Control.

Following the first successful lunar landing, the team plans for the "Lunar Lions" to re-launch and head to a second landing site. “We began preparing for this mission in January 2013. This phase will conclude in July 2014, as we transition from design to lab testing and start actual development,” they explained. During this time, the team will conduct experiments on Earth to simulate descent, landing, and re-flight. From December 2015 to January 2016, mission control will manage flight operations. Throughout this period, they plan to share stunning HD footage and photos with the public, highlighting the achievements of the "Lunar Lions." Among all their accomplishments, the Gold Lander will stand as their most significant creation.
