The "Material Industry and Environmental Protection Seminar" was recently organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, in collaboration with the China Materials Research Society and the National New Materials Industry Development Strategy Advisory Committee. The event brought together leading experts to discuss pressing issues related to environmental sustainability within the material industry.
Experts at the seminar examined the environmental impact of material production, focusing on energy consumption and emissions in sectors such as non-ferrous metals, steel, petrochemicals, and construction materials. They also explored ways to effectively manage pollutants like air, water, and soil contamination, as well as the life cycle of materials from production to usage. A wide range of topics were covered, sparking in-depth discussions among participants.
Academician Shi Changxu, a member of both the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Russian Academy of Sciences, sent a special congratulatory message. He emphasized that the material industry is a cornerstone of the national economy, contributing significantly to overall energy use and pollution. While technological advancements have helped China’s material industry move toward greener practices, he noted that there is still a significant gap compared to more developed industrial nations. With worsening environmental conditions, stricter energy-saving and emission-reduction measures are now essential, pushing the industry toward a deeper green transformation.
Gan Yong, vice dean of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and an academician, highlighted that without progress in energy efficiency and emission control in key manufacturing processes, broader industry upgrades will remain out of reach. He stressed that breakthroughs in process technology require innovative energy materials.
Academician Cao Xianghong, head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, pointed out that supporting energy conservation and environmental protection is a major direction for the development of new chemical materials in China. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of advancing material processing and application technologies.
Technological innovation remains central to reducing energy use and pollution. In his letter, Shi Changxu urged the integration of relevant scientific and technical challenges and equipment upgrades into new material development, calling for strong institutional support.
Participants at the seminar reached a consensus that addressing environmental issues requires two main approaches: first, controlling pollution at its source to minimize harmful emissions; and second, effectively managing existing pollutants. As a vital sector of the national economy, the material industry contributes significantly to both output and energy use. Achieving green and environmentally friendly production has become a necessary requirement for sustainable industrial growth. At the same time, leveraging new material technologies to protect and treat existing pollutants has become a major focus of public concern.
