This line reflects the persistent smog that has been affecting people across the country. It's not just an inconvenience—it's a serious health hazard that has forced many to rethink their daily routines.

As a result, the public has turned to protective measures, with masks becoming a common sight. On Taobao, dust masks have seen a surge in demand, with the top-selling product hitting over 80,000 units sold from January to now. People are no longer just wearing face masks; they're investing in more advanced protection, such as gas masks equipped with "toxic cartridges," especially in heavily polluted areas.

Gas masks, once considered extreme, are now increasingly seen in subways, buses, and on city streets. While these masks may seem exaggerated compared to regular face coverings, for those constantly exposed to air pollution, they’ve become a necessity. One Beijing-based worker shared a photo online showing himself wearing a gas mask, jokingly comparing it to a Transformer. He wrote, “After three days of chronic bronchitis symptoms, I finally got a specialized dust-proof respirator. The positive and negative pressure tests were normal. Theoretically, it can block particles larger than 0.075 microns. The silicone seal was tight against my face, but I use it less and less these days.”

To raise awareness about the issue, some netizens have even taken to poetry. One popular post reads: “Houde carries fog, self-strength doesn’t suck. Buns work hard, and create ash-yellow again,” a humorous yet sharp critique of cities plagued by severe air pollution. These words reflect the frustration and concern of ordinary citizens who are witnessing the impact of environmental degradation on their lives.

While gas masks offer some relief, choosing the right one is crucial. Not all masks are created equal, and improper use can be ineffective or even dangerous. As air quality continues to be a pressing issue, staying informed and protected is more important than ever.
