Hard hat cannot replace helmet

At Zhengyang Plaza in Green Park, Changchun City, a local motorcyclist named Pharaoh recently caught the attention of traffic police while preparing to ride his motorcycle. He picked up a hard hat from the handlebars, mistaking it for a proper helmet, and was about to set off. A nearby traffic officer, Wang Hao, noticed the situation and immediately approached him. “This is a hard hat, not a motorcycle helmet,” Wang Hao said firmly. “You can’t treat life so carelessly.” It turned out that Pharaoh had been using a construction helmet sent by a friend as a makeshift motorcycle helmet, which posed a serious safety risk. Seeing this, Wang Hao stepped in to educate him on the importance of proper safety equipment. Pharaoh, feeling embarrassed, laughed it off and promised to be more cautious next time. Unfortunately, such incidents are not uncommon. Many motorcyclists still use hard hats from construction sites as helmets, ride unlicensed vehicles on main roads, or even drive without a valid license. These actions are not only illegal but also extremely dangerous. The hard hats used on construction sites are not designed to protect against the impact of a motorcycle accident. In the event of an accident, they offer little to no protection, which can lead to severe injury or even death. Wang Hao explained that for motorcycles driven without proper licensing, the vehicle will be seized by the vehicle management office. Motorcyclists without a valid driver’s license may face detention. Additionally, those who fail to wear proper motorcycle helmets could be fined 50 yuan. He emphasized the importance of following traffic rules and wearing the right safety gear. In addition to enforcing laws, the traffic police also remind motorcyclists to be cautious when purchasing their bikes. They advise against buying motorcycles that only come with a car invoice but lack factory certification. Such vehicles cannot be legally registered and are not allowed on public roads. Driving them is risky and could result in fines or legal consequences. Wang Kechang, another officer, visited popular motorcycle gathering spots near Zhengyang Square and Nachimei Comprehensive Mall to educate riders on road safety and proper riding practices. “Many motorcyclists lack basic knowledge about safe driving,” he said. “It’s important to understand the rules and always prioritize safety. Never drive under the influence of alcohol.” Whether you're on a motorcycle or a car, your actions affect not just yourself but others on the road. Safety should always come first.
