The key to bathroom decoration is comfort and safety

Gas threats to stay away

Gas poisoning is one of the most dangerous hidden dangers in the bathroom. To prevent such incidents, it's crucial to think carefully about the design and layout during bathroom renovation. First and foremost, proper ventilation is essential. A bathroom should always have an exhaust fan with a backdraft damper to stop dirty air from flowing back. If possible, install windows for natural airflow. If no windows are available, pay close attention to the door design—make sure the threshold is slightly higher than the inside of the bathroom to prevent water from spilling out, and leave a small gap between the door and the floor to allow for proper air circulation. For sliding doors, ensure that a waterproof layer is installed between the tiles and the door frame to avoid moisture buildup.

Next, the installation of gas water heaters and gas pipelines must be handled with care. Before any renovation begins, turn off the gas valves and cover gas equipment like meters and pressure regulators with plastic bags to protect them from dust and damage. Avoid using hard objects to hit or smash anything near the gas lines. Never hang heavy items on the pipes or attempt to modify them yourself. Any changes should be done by a licensed professional from the gas company. Also, keep power outlets at least 20cm away from gas facilities, and never seal the gas water heater inside a cabinet. Only balanced-type gas water heaters are allowed in bathrooms, and after installation, use professional tools to check for leaks. Always remember to turn off the heater after each shower.

Be careful with the "electric tiger" in the bathroom

Water is a great conductor of electricity, so even a small leak in the bathroom can lead to serious electric shocks. Many accidents occur due to poor wiring or outdated electrical systems during bathroom renovations. In many homes, the original grounding system may be damaged during construction, which can create hidden electrical risks. According to surveys, around 76% of homes in China have potential electrical hazards. To prevent this, take bathroom electrical safety seriously from the start.

All wire connections in the bathroom should be tinned and wrapped with both waterproof and insulating tape. The wires themselves should be protected by flame-retardant conduits. All switches and sockets must be enclosed in moisture-proof boxes, and their placement should be based on the location of appliances for convenience and safety. It's best to install switches outside the bathroom, and all wiring inside should be sealed, waterproof, and insulated. If there’s a socket in the bathroom, place it away from water sources and consider covering it. Never touch electrical devices with wet hands.

Additionally, key areas like the toilet, jacuzzi, and shower area should have leakage and overload protection. High-quality electrical products usually come with these features to ensure safe usage.

Drainage performance needs attention

Since the bathroom is constantly exposed to water, its waterproofing is critical. No one wants a leaking bathroom. When laying floor tiles, make sure there's a 1% slope towards the drain to help water flow out quickly. Both the materials and the construction process for waterproofing are equally important. Floor tile joints should be consistent in thickness, aligned with wall tiles, and properly flattened when applied. Before installing wall tiles, the walls should be treated with waterproofing to prevent moisture from seeping through. Experts warn that areas where pipes, grooves, and floor drains pass through the floor are especially prone to leaks. These spots require extra attention during waterproofing.

While a thicker waterproof layer is better, it's important to meet national standards (typically 1.5mm). Different areas of the bathroom may require different methods depending on how much water they’re exposed to. For example, pipe grooves need to be smooth and fully waterproofed. The number of coats and thickness should follow product instructions. Construction should be meticulous, with special attention paid to areas like the junctions between walls and floors, water pipes, and floor drains.

Moisture proof, non-slip

For families with elderly members or children, ensuring the bathroom is both moisture-resistant and slip-proof is essential for safety. When planning the bathroom, consider waterproofing, moisture resistance, tile selection, and ceiling treatments. When laying wall and floor tiles, make sure the waterproof layer is placed beneath the surface. Use cement mortar to level the floor, apply a waterproof coating, then lay a thin layer of mortar as a bonding layer before placing the tiles. After watering, use a wooden board to press the tiles flat and secure the seams tightly. Suspended ceilings with micro-aluminum gussets are recommended to improve ventilation and reduce condensation. If using a gypsum board ceiling, first apply waterproof putty and then a waterproof coating. PVC ceilings can cause condensation issues, so use them cautiously.

The installation of pipes also plays a big role in preventing slips. Avoid changing the original plumbing layout if possible. Pipes should be laid horizontally and vertically, firmly fixed, and with the correct slope. Fittings and faucets should be installed straight, flexible, and easy to use. Apply anti-rust paint to visible pipes and anti-corrosive paint to hidden ones. Ensure all water supply connections are tight and leak-free. Finally, the floor drain should be slightly lower than the surrounding floor to ensure proper drainage.
