The key to bathroom decoration is comfort and safety
Gas threats to stay away
Gas poisoning is one of the most dangerous hidden dangers in bathrooms, often overlooked by many homeowners. To ensure safety during bathroom renovation, it's essential to plan carefully. First and foremost, proper ventilation is key. A bathroom should always have an exhaust fan with a backdraft damper to prevent stale air from flowing back in. If possible, install windows for natural airflow. If no windows are available, make sure the door has a gap at the bottom to allow air circulation. The threshold of the door should be slightly higher than the floor inside the bathroom to prevent water from seeping out. For sliding doors, use waterproofing between the tiles and the frame to avoid moisture damage.
Next, pay close attention to gas water heater installation and gas pipeline placement. Before starting any renovation, turn off the gas supply and cover gas meters and regulators with plastic bags to protect them from dust and paint. Never hit or damage the pipes with hard objects. Avoid hanging heavy items on the gas lines, and never alter the pipeline yourself. Any changes must be done by a licensed professional from the gas company. Keep a minimum distance of 20 cm between gas equipment and electrical outlets. Ensure that there is enough space around the gas water heater, and never enclose it in a cabinet. Only balanced-type gas water heaters can be installed in the bathroom. After finishing the renovation, use professional tools to check for gas leaks, and always turn off the heater after each shower.
Be careful with the bathroom electric tiger
Water conducts electricity, making the bathroom one of the most dangerous areas in a home. Many electrical accidents in bathrooms are caused by poor wiring or outdated materials. During renovations, the grounding system can be damaged, leading to serious risks. According to surveys, about 76% of homes in China have potential electrical hazards. Therefore, bathroom electrical work must be handled with care. All wire joints should be tinned and wrapped with waterproof and insulating tape. Wires should be covered with flame-retardant conduits. All switches and sockets need to be in moisture-proof boxes, placed strategically for convenience and safety. It's best to install switches outside the bathroom and ensure all wiring is sealed, waterproof, and insulated. If there’s a socket in the bathroom, keep it away from water sources and consider covering it. Never touch electrical devices with wet hands.
Special attention should be given to high-risk areas like toilets, jacuzzis, and showers. These spaces should have both leakage and overload protection. High-quality appliances usually come with these features, ensuring safer usage.
Drainage performance needs attention
Proper drainage is crucial for a well-functioning bathroom. Poor waterproofing can lead to leaks, mold, and structural damage. When laying floor tiles, create a slight slope (about 1%) toward the drain to ensure water flows quickly. The waterproofing process is just as important as material selection. Floor and wall tiles should be aligned properly, with consistent joint thickness. Before installing wall tiles, apply waterproofing to the walls first. Key areas such as pipe grooves, floor drains, and junctions are prone to leaks and require extra attention. A waterproof layer of at least 1.5 mm is recommended, meeting national standards. Different areas may require different construction methods depending on their exposure to water. For example, water pipe grooves should be smooth and waterproofed multiple times. Always supervise the construction to ensure quality and accuracy. Check that all waterproofing areas are fully covered, not just partial spots. Follow product instructions for application, and make sure the surface is clean and even.
Moisture proof, non-slip
For households with elderly members or children, slip resistance and moisture control are essential. When choosing tiles and materials, prioritize those with good anti-slip properties. Apply a waterproof layer beneath the surface tiles, then use cement mortar to level the floor before applying the waterproof coating. A bonding layer of 1–2 cm cement mortar is used to attach the tiles. After watering, smooth the surface with a wooden board to ensure firmness and tight seams. For ceilings, use suspended systems with micro-aluminum gussets to improve ventilation and reduce condensation. If using gypsum boards, apply waterproof putty and coating first. PVC ceilings can cause condensation, so they should be used cautiously.
Finally, the layout of plumbing is also important for slip prevention. Avoid altering the original piping if possible. Install pipes horizontally and vertically, ensuring they are secure and meet slope requirements. Faucets and valves should be easy to operate and flexible. Apply anti-rust paint to visible pipes and anti-corrosive paint to hidden ones. All connections should be tight, and a water test should be conducted to check for leaks. Floor drains should be slightly lower than the surrounding floor to ensure proper drainage.
