On August 6th, a new "colleague" was welcomed at the Puguang Gas Production Plant—a scanning electron microscope. This advanced equipment is expected to significantly enhance the plant's corrosion research capabilities and serve as a valuable tool in the laboratory. Zhang Cheng, a Ph.D. from the Engineering Research Institute of Oil Production Engineering, emphasized its importance in supporting ongoing efforts to improve corrosion monitoring and prevention.
Puguang Gas Field is classified as a high-acid gas field, with an average hydrogen sulfide content of up to 16%, making it highly susceptible to corrosion. From the very beginning of development, corrosion has been a major challenge that threatened the safe and efficient operation of the gas field. To tackle this issue, Puguang has invested heavily in technological innovation, integrating multiple corrosion control and monitoring techniques such as corrosion inhibitor injection, pre-coating, cathodic protection, and intelligent pipeline inspection. These measures are akin to preserving fresh produce, ensuring the long-term integrity and smooth operation of the gas gathering system.
"We have implemented one of the most comprehensive anti-corrosion monitoring systems in international high-acid gas fields," said Hui Xiaomin, Deputy Director of the Institute of Oil Production Engineering Technology. "Since the gas field started production over three years ago, the corrosion rate of the gathering system has remained below the target of 0.076 mm per year, maintaining a safe and controlled condition."
The corrosion monitoring system covers the entire gathering and transportation network, including corrosion coupons, electric head probes, and electrical fingerprinting technologies. With 138 key monitoring points across the main gas collection stations, data from each location is uploaded to a central database, providing critical insights for assessing the corrosion status of the system and guiding future maintenance strategies.
Corrosion monitoring not only helps track the current condition of the system but also plays a vital role in optimizing anti-corrosion strategies. Liu Erxi, Deputy Director of the Technical Office at the Gas Production Plant, explained: "In the early stages of production, due to the presence of both hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, we increased the continuous injection of corrosion inhibitors for safety. In the first half of this year, we conducted a thorough analysis of the corrosion status and optimized the parameters for inhibitor injection and residual concentration, adjusting the dosage and frequency of application."
A pilot test was carried out at the Puguang 107 gas gathering station, leading to further refinements in the injection scheme. As a result, the continuous corrosion inhibitor usage was reduced to 54 liters per million cubic meters of natural gas, saving approximately 17 million yuan in costs during the first half of the year.
Effective anti-corrosion management requires not only detailed assessments but also well-designed treatment plans. The Puguang Gas Field houses one of Sinopec’s two hydrogen sulfide laboratories. Zhang Cheng noted, "Our high-pressure corrosion testing facility is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, allowing researchers to investigate and address corrosion issues in the gas gathering system. Just like a doctor diagnosing a patient, we develop targeted 'prescriptions' to guide and improve the anti-corrosion efforts in the field."
With the gas field operating at full capacity, the laboratory has completed numerous studies, including corrosion research on the sewage discharge pipelines in Dawan. It has also actively participated in various projects related to corrosion inhibitor exchange in key areas like Dawan and Puguang. These efforts provide scientifically sound and efficient solutions for managing corrosion in the gathering system.
"Controlling corrosion is not just a technical necessity—it's also a social responsibility," said Cao Yanguang, Director of the Institute of Oil Production Engineering Technology.
