At 12:00 PM on May 16, the temperature at Longhai Port in Laizhou Bay, Bohai Sea, hit a scorching 33 degrees Celsius. Yang Fengsheng, an experienced technician from the Eastern Geophysical Prospector Dagang Geophysical Exploration Department's Beach and Beach Carrier Service Center, was working with his apprentice, Wang Gang. Both were wearing gas masks as they repaired a hang-up boat, a crucial tool used in offshore exploration.
The process involved polishing and gluing the damaged part of the boat using rubber and repair leather. When the two materials came into contact, a chemical reaction occurred, producing a distinct squeaking sound. Yang watched closely as more gas began to accumulate at the repair site. Suddenly, he shouted, “Hey!†Wang quickly pressed a wooden stick onto the patch to release the pressure.
“Every time you want to make it even, push one side and squeeze out all the gas,†Yang advised. After their coordinated effort, the repaired leather was embedded into the scratch of the boat. Yang then fastened the buckle edge securely.
Curious about the high-temperature conditions, I asked, “Why do you have to work in such heat?†Yang explained that the hang-up boat is a vital transportation tool for offshore operations. It consists of a rubber hull and a power motor mounted at the back, hence the name “hang-on boat.†The rubber hull requires strict environmental conditions—both temperature and humidity must be controlled. If not, repairs could fail, leading to bulges or even total failure of the hull. On land, there are climate-controlled workshops, but at sea, workers have no choice but to work under extreme heat to meet the standards.
The glue used in the repair contains toluene, a toxic substance. That’s why gas masks with activated carbon filters are essential. However, these masks are uncomfortable, making workers sweat heavily during long hours of work.
After completing the repair, Yang and Wang prepared to test the boat. They removed their masks, and Yang wiped the sweat from his forehead. “Working in the sun with a gas mask is just part of our daily routine,†Wang said. “Over time, we’ve developed white marks on our faces. Some people thought I had vitiligo.â€
Yang, 40 years old with 20 years of experience, is passionate about the inner workings of the hang-up boats. In 2013, he improved equipment efficiency by reworking the circuits, achieving excellent results.
When asked about his wishes, Yang smiled and said, “Children’s Day is coming up soon. I hope to take my daughter on a trip around the sea using the hang-up boat I maintain. I want her to see the ocean and enjoy the ride.â€
