Bellflower, also known as the bell flower or tile flower, is a striking plant native to southern Europe. It features a strong, upright stem and blossoms that resemble tiny wind chimes, with bright and elegant flowers that have made it a favorite in European gardens. This herbaceous plant is commonly seen in small gardens during late spring and early summer, often symbolizing health, gentleness, and charm.
Bellflowers are long-lasting and can naturally flower for up to 14 hours a day. If you want to encourage earlier blooming, you can interrupt the night period with 4 hours of light for 30 days. This light treatment should be applied when the plant has developed about 15 true leaves. If the plant is too small at the start, it's best to use this method for initial growth, allowing the plant to enter a vigorous growth phase later.

These plants don’t require pruning or topping. In the early stages, they may appear disorganized, but they tend to grow neat and compact as they mature. Bellflowers prefer cooler conditions and are typically grown through the winter, completing their life cycle in the following spring. They need at least 14 hours of light daily. The flowering period is long, taking around 30 days from bud to bloom. With extended daylight, sowing in November is ideal, while under natural conditions, planting in January or February will allow them to thrive in the summer.
During cold weather, it’s important to protect them from frost by using a low-temperature greenhouse. In the Yangtze River region, seedlings should be placed in a cold bed for protection. When the seedlings are in summer, some shade is necessary to prevent sun damage. Like sea holly, bellflowers grow slowly at first, but they should be transplanted into their final pots before the roots become too established.
For propagation, bellflowers are usually grown from seeds. If sown immediately after the seeds mature, the plants will bloom the following year. However, if sown in autumn, most seedlings won’t flower until the end of the third year.
