To better understand permeation, consider the example of a balloon. Even though a balloon appears completely sealed, gas molecules can still pass through its thin rubber wall over time. This same principle applies to chemical permeation in gloves—chemicals may seep through the material without any visible signs of damage, highlighting the importance of testing for this property.

Permeation is typically measured using two key parameters: breakthrough time and permeation rate. Breakthrough time refers to the time it takes for a chemical to penetrate through the glove during a six-hour test period. This value helps determine how long the glove can effectively protect against chemical exposure. The permeation rate, on the other hand, indicates how quickly the chemical passes through the material once it starts to penetrate.

Another important factor to consider is degradation. This occurs when a glove’s material begins to break down due to prolonged contact with chemicals. As a result, the physical properties of the glove, such as flexibility, strength, and elasticity, can be severely affected. Some gloves may become brittle, while others may soften or shrink, significantly reducing their protective capabilities. Therefore, it's crucial to choose gloves that are not only chemically resistant but also able to maintain their structural integrity under various conditions.
