If you want your potted jasmine to bloom more abundantly, there are several effective techniques you can use. These methods not only encourage more flowers but also help maintain the health and shape of the plant.
1. Pruning. Jasmine tends to flower best between 3 to 6 years old. Once it starts aging, it's important to renew it properly. Before spring growth begins, you should trim the older branches back to about 10-15 cm from the base. This encourages the growth of thick, new shoots. If the new growth is very vigorous, pinch back the tips when they reach around 10 cm to promote side shoots. This helps create a compact, attractive shape that enhances the plant’s ornamental value. Always prune on a sunny day, and combine it with removing any diseased or weak branches to improve air circulation and support better blooming.
2. Fertilizing. Jasmine is a heavy feeder, especially since it produces multiple blooms throughout the year. To ensure continuous flowering, it needs regular and sufficient nutrients. Using organic liquid fertilizers like well-composted manure or a mix of human waste, chicken and duck droppings, pig manure, and soybean cake (all must be properly cooked) works well. When applying fertilizer, it’s best to sprinkle it around the edge of the pot where the soil has slightly dried. Once new shoots start growing, apply diluted manure (1 part manure to 9 parts water) every 7 days. As the flowering intensifies, you can increase the concentration and apply it every 3 days. During the second and third flowering periods, which usually occur in milder temperatures, you can fertilize once every 1-2 days. However, as the season progresses, gradually reduce both fertilizer and water to prevent the plant from becoming too soft and vulnerable during winter.
