Centrifugal glass wool felt is one of the oldest and most widely used sound-absorbing materials. It's commonly found in lightweight exterior wall insulation systems, where it plays a key role in soundproofing, thermal insulation, and fire resistance. The typical structure of such a system includes a gypsum board, followed by a framework (keel), then the centrifugal glass wool board, and another layer of gypsum board. In this setup, the glass wool board absorbs sound waves that pass through the outer gypsum board, reducing their energy and preventing them from bouncing back and forth within the cavity formed between the boards and the keel. This process significantly enhances the overall sound insulation performance of the exterior wall.
However, the centrifugal glass wool felt available on the market often has a density of no more than 60kg/m³, which makes it very soft and less effective at sound absorption. Over time, it tends to sag, leading to a complete loss of its soundproofing capabilities. Additionally, many commercially available products use excessive amounts of adhesive to maintain structural integrity at low densities. This not only compromises fire resistance but also contributes to sagging and deformation.
Specialized centrifugal glass wool boards are designed with better construction in mind. They are manually applied to ensure even distribution and strength, and they are pressed at high temperatures without requiring too much glue. This helps preserve the material’s fire-resistant properties and prevents sagging. These boards are also manufactured in standard widths—such as 800mm, 600mm, and 400mm—to match common keel spacing, making installation faster and easier. This reduces waste and minimizes the need for cutting A-grade fireproof rock wool boards during construction.
