Gypsophila cultivation introduction

Gypsophila, commonly known as baby's breath, is a delicate and charming flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region. It thrives in warm, humid, and sunny conditions, and is particularly resilient to cold, drought, and shade. This plant prefers well-drained, fertile, and loose loamy soil. For optimal growth, it's best to use slightly alkaline lime soil that allows good drainage and receives plenty of sunlight. Once the plant reaches a height of over 20 cm, watering should be reduced slightly. A mild drought can actually encourage blooming. However, after flowering, poor drainage or prolonged rain can cause root rot, so it's important to avoid waterlogged conditions. Gypsophila prefers moderate temperatures, ideally between 10°C and 25°C, making it suitable for sowing during autumn through early spring. The plant contains various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenols, amino acids, volatile oils, and coumarins, contributing to its ornamental and potential medicinal value. Germination occurs best at temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. Sowing is typically done from autumn to early spring. Seedlings should be planted in loose soil, sown in September, and lightly covered with fine soil. Germination usually takes about 10 days. Before winter, seedlings are moved to a cold bed to protect them from frost. In the following spring, the plants are transplanted into open fields. When planting, ensure the roots are carefully handled to promote healthy growth. Once the plant reaches 25 cm in height, reduce watering to encourage flowering. Blooming typically occurs between mid-May and late May. Gypsophila can also be sown directly in early November before freezing or in early spring. Propagation is primarily done through cuttings. In spring, take hardwood cuttings from last year’s mature branches, cutting them into 10–15 cm lengths and inserting them into a sand bed. Rooting usually takes around 30 days. During the rainy season, softwood cuttings can also be used, taking the current year's top shoots, which typically root within 2–3 weeks. Each spring, when repotting, add fresh, nutrient-rich soil and keep the potting mix moist during the growing season. Fertilize every two weeks to support leaf and flower development. In autumn, prune the entire plant to maintain a neat and attractive shape.
