From July 11 to 12, the Science and Technology Management Department of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) led an expert panel to conduct a mid-term review of a key research project on new technologies and methods for oil and gas development. The project, carried out by the State Key Laboratory for Enhanced Oil Recovery and the Exploration and Development Research Institute, has shown remarkable progress. Experts highlighted that the project is laying a solid foundation for CNPC to maintain a competitive edge in future oil and gas technology advancements.
The initiative focuses on addressing the technological needs of the company over the next 10 to 20 years, with an emphasis on developing application bases and supporting technologies. Significant achievements have been made across five core areas: nano-intelligent oil displacement agents, heavy oil upgrading catalysts, three-phase relative permeability testing, complex reservoir geological modeling, and numerical simulation. These developments have demonstrated strong potential for practical use, resulting in 19 invention patent applications, four granted patents, five software systems, two national standards, eight experimental specifications, and 31 published academic papers.
The research team has achieved notable breakthroughs in several key areas. First, they developed a water-repellent, oil-drip, and intelligent oil-displacement technology, along with a surface modification method for nanoparticles, leading to the synthesis of four distinct intelligent nano-oil displacement agent samples. Second, they introduced a novel in-situ thermal viscosity reduction and catalytic upgrading technique for heavy oil, producing a series of dual-functional oxidation/modification catalysts. Third, they created advanced experimental techniques for CT core scanning, three-phase fluid saturation identification, and quantitative analysis. Fourth, they developed a new reservoir modeling technology based on fault separation, multi-boundary, and random interference interpolation. Lastly, they innovated mathematical models for complex seepage in high-water-content and low-permeability reservoirs, as well as unstructured grid simulation methods, successfully launching HiSim 2.0, a proprietary numerical simulation software.
Looking ahead, the project will focus on cutting-edge directions such as large-scale, wide-area, and promising applications. It aims to clarify research priorities, enhance original innovation, and strengthen independent R&D capabilities. On-site experiments will be accelerated to ensure the successful completion of the "Twelfth Five-Year" plan's objectives for oil and gas development.
