Children's furniture companies face three major dilemmas

In recent months, Nankang Furniture Store has seen a growing presence of around seven to eight children’s furniture brands, with more customers opting for kids’ furniture than adult options. This trend highlights the increasing demand for products specifically designed for children. In one of the brand stores on the second floor, Ms. Sun, a customer, was purchasing a children's bed for her 5-year-old son. She shared that when selecting a children’s bed, her top priority is ensuring there are no toxic or harmful substances involved. She also pays close attention to the design details, such as the corners and edges, to ensure safety and comfort for her child. When asked if she was aware of the new national standards for children’s furniture, Ms. Sun admitted she wasn’t. A random survey of other parents shopping for children’s furniture in the store revealed that most were also unaware of the updated regulations. Experts point out that the children’s furniture industry still faces several challenges. First, the industry lacks standardized guidelines, leading to inconsistent quality and weak oversight. Many small manufacturers may cut corners, producing unqualified products that pose hidden risks to children. The introduction of China’s first national standard for children’s furniture, “General Technical Conditions for Children’s Furniture,” which came into effect on August 1st this year, marks a significant step forward. This standard provides much-needed guidance for parents and helps address the previous lack of regulation in the market. Zhou Dayong, a general manager from a children’s furniture company in the Beijing-Tianjin area, emphasized that the new standard will help bring order to an otherwise chaotic market. He believes that while the EU has stricter testing procedures—such as TUV certification, which conducts random checks and can immediately revoke a brand’s certification if issues are found—China still needs to strengthen its regulatory framework. Yang Tao, chairman of a children’s furniture brand, added that current domestic inspections are limited. Some rely on factory certificates, which aren’t always reliable, while others only test certain batches. The new national standard is mandatory and should serve as a stronger deterrent against substandard products. Industry insiders also stress that children’s furniture must meet higher environmental and safety requirements due to children’s weaker immune systems. For example, the new standard mandates that all children’s furniture must avoid sharp edges and have rounded or chamfered corners. It also sets strict limits on 10 types of harmful substances, including formaldehyde, lead, benzene, and chromium—substances that are not allowed in EU-certified children’s furniture. Another major challenge is the high level of homogenization and widespread plagiarism in the industry. Many companies simply produce a “miniature” version of adult furniture, neglecting the unique needs of children. According to Zhou Dayong, children’s furniture should not just be smaller versions of adult items; it should reflect their preferences and personality. To protect themselves, consumers are advised to carefully review product test reports and request environmental protection guarantees in sales contracts. If a seller refuses to provide such assurances, it may be best to walk away. Additionally, choosing furniture made with minimal adhesives can reduce formaldehyde levels. Consumers should also avoid overly bright-colored furniture, as these often contain harmful chemicals. When selecting materials, it's recommended to go for solid wood or high-quality laminates over particle board or MDF. Environmental labels and third-party certifications can also serve as useful indicators of quality and safety. With the introduction of the new national standard, the children’s furniture market is moving toward greater transparency and accountability. However, ongoing consumer awareness and vigilance remain essential to ensure that the products available truly meet the needs of children.
