Audience develops multi-sensor computing technology

Audience, an audio processor company inspired by the human brain's ability to receive and process stimuli, has pioneered a neuroscience-based multi-sensor computing technology. This innovative approach simulates how humans hear and process sound within microchips, enhancing natural voice interaction and enabling always-on voice and motion sensing. The company focuses on commercializing auditory neuroscience, translating insights about how the brain processes signals into advanced digital signal processing (DSP) audio chip solutions. Since launching its first product at the end of 2008, Audience has seen widespread adoption, with over 220 mobile devices using its voice processors and more than 400 million units shipped globally. Bart DeCanne, Vice President of Marketing at Audience, highlights the brain’s remarkable ability to focus on one voice in a noisy environment—like picking out a single conversation in a crowded room. This capability forms the foundation of Audience’s technology, which mimics the brain’s sensory processing to enhance user experience. Beyond hearing, the human brain integrates multiple senses, including motion and vision. Audience replicates this neural integration to enable devices to respond intelligently to various inputs. Their latest offerings include the eS700 multi-sensor processor family and the ultra-low-power MQ100 motion processor. These technologies are set to be adopted in the second half of the year, offering features like Always-On VoiceQ and MotionQ for seamless device interaction. VoiceQ is a low-power speech detection system that allows continuous listening without false activations. It enables devices to recognize voice commands even in noisy environments, reducing power consumption and improving accuracy. With less than 1.5mA current draw, it supports wake-free operation and multi-user authentication through pre-programmed keywords, replacing traditional PINs with voice login. The eS700 series also supports directional and 360-degree voice modes, making it ideal for conference calls or hands-free use. Meanwhile, the eS75X intelligent audio codec delivers exceptional signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and analog performance, supporting a wide range of audio output options. MotionQ technology enables context-aware applications like gesture recognition and indoor navigation while consuming under 5mW of power. The MQ100 motion-sensing processor further reduces power usage to under 5mW, offering a compact, cost-effective solution for sensor integration. Audience recently partnered with MediaTek to integrate the eS700 series into its MT6592 and MT6290 LTE platforms, providing a tested audio subsystem that meets diverse audio needs and streamlines development for manufacturers. Based on Computational Auditory Scene Analysis (CASA), Audience’s technology enhances voice communication and noise suppression in mobile devices, delivering clearer, more natural sound in any environment.
