A compact personal air quality monitor, designed to give you real-time PM2.5 readings around you. As PM2.5 levels have become a growing concern across major cities in China, people are now more aware of the air quality not just in their cities, but also in their offices, cars, and other personal spaces. This small device can help you stay informed about the air you breathe every day.
According to environmental experts in Dongguan, this personal air quality monitor uses dust sensors on both sides of the air ducts. After basic local filtering, the data is pushed through PAM’s web application to the cloud. There's also a portable version called MINI PAM, roughly the size of a Coke bottle, making it easy to carry. It connects to the cloud via mobile data or Bluetooth. With the help of cloud-based big data processing, the system delivers accurate air quality information tailored to your surroundings.
The name of the monitor stands for "Pervasive Air-Quality Monitoring" (PAM). Developed by Dr. Jiang Xiaofan and his team at the China Intel IoT Technology Research Institute, this device represents a breakthrough in affordable air quality monitoring. Currently, most personal air quality monitors available in the market are imported and cost between 3,000 to 50,000 yuan. However, the prototype developed by Dr. Jiang’s team is expected to be priced around 200 yuan, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Experts suggest that using low-cost distributed dust sensors allows for collecting massive amounts of raw data, which is then analyzed by cloud systems. This approach significantly reduces the cost of traditional air quality monitoring. PAM follows the concept of a "Network of Workstations," where a large number of inexpensive devices form a comprehensive and accurate measurement network, surpassing the limitations of a few expensive but less widespread devices.
By leveraging the cloud, the system creates a multi-dimensional statistical model of air quality based on data from each user. The cloud processor analyzes and corrects the data from nearby public stations and users, recalibrating the air quality index for more precise results. The final output isn’t just a single number—it’s categorized into levels like “Good,†“Fair,†“Poor,†and “Worst,†with corresponding health tips to guide users in making better decisions.
Combined with GPS technology, the monitor can identify pollution sources and even plan the safest route between two points. This makes it not only a smart tool for personal use but also a valuable asset for urban planning and public health initiatives.
